My name is Claudia Anselmo. I quit the big city in 2023 and went off-grid in the heart of the Yucatan jungle, where I bought an 80 acre (32 hectare) tract of virgin subtropical jungle. My nearest neighbor is 8 kilometers away. Starting from scratch, with the help of a couple of local workers, I built a traditional Mayan log palapa and set myself up with the basics: bio-digester, solar energy and the pre-existing well. Living off-grid is a growing trend for many who want to get back to nature. If those who have gone through with their off-grid projects in temperate climates think it’s hard, imagine how much harder it is to do this in an extreme environment of 40C/104F heat, rocky roads, thorny trees, terrifying thunderstorms, and deadly snakes and insects. Having questioned my sanity several times during this perpetual process, I have to at least be in awe at how tough I am for having lasted this long here.
